About
The Tri-City Racing Series is a cornerstone of grassroots motorsport in British Columbia’s Cariboo region, uniting the racing communities of Prince George, Quesnel, and Williams Lake and Grand Prairie.
Origins and Early Years
The series began in the early 1970s as a collaboration among local stock car clubs. Each weekend, racers would compete at one of the three tracks, culminating in a Tri-City Racing Champion at season’s end. This rotating format fostered camaraderie and healthy competition among the towns, laying the foundation for a vibrant regional racing culture.
Revival and Expansion
After a period of dormancy, the series was revitalized in the early 2010s. In 2012, it returned with 12 drivers participating in the opening race at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Williams Lake. By 2014, the series had expanded to include a fourth race in Penticton, thanks to growing interest from southern and island-based drivers. This expansion led to a new championship format, allowing competitors to count their best three out of four finishes toward the title, accommodating those facing mechanical or financial challenges.
Community and Support
The series’ growth has been bolstered by community support and sponsorship. In 2014, Fraser Bevz Broughton Chartered Accountants (FBB) became the main series sponsor, contributing an additional $6,000 and bringing the total four-race payout to $10,000. Including track payouts and travel reimbursements, the total prize pool reached approximately $25,000, attracting talent from across the province.
Looking Ahead
Today, the Tri-City Racing Series continues to thrive, offering thrilling, competitive racing that honors its rich history while embracing new talent. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community-driven motorsport in British Columbia.
